Our Valerie A. Foster, DMD, PC team cares about you, your smile, and your oral health, which is why we strongly recommend protecting your teeth with a mouth guard while you participate in high-contact sports and activities.

There are many mouthguards available that can protect your smile, and some of those mouthguards include:

Stock mouthguards: A stock mouthguard can be found at most sporting goods stores. The best part about this appliance is that it is preformed and ready to wear. This means that you can take it out of the package and put it right into your mouth. However, little can be done to adjust the fit, so please keep that in mind.

Boil-and-bite mouth guards: A boil-and-bite mouthguard can also be found at most sporting goods stores, but you can slightly adjust its form and fit. It’s made of thermoplastic material, so all you need to do is soften the appliance in hot water, put it in your mouth, and then use your fingers and tongue to apply pressure to it. It is a little bulky, but it offers a better fit than a stock mouthguard.

Custom-fitted mouthguards: A custom-fitted mouthguard is not available in a sporting goods store. Your dentist is the one who will create it for you. All you need to do is come into our office and let our team take impressions of your smile. Once the impressions are made, they will be sent to the dental lab where your guard will be created. Because this guard is custom made, it will provide a pristine fit, which will give you the utmost protection and comfort.
