Today’s advanced dental technology allows people to choose from a multitude of products that will allow them to whiten their teeth. Whether it’s using products bought at the store you can use at home, over-the-counter products, or even a dentist-recommended product, we want to help you find the right care for your teeth.

Advancements in the dental field have found peroxides such as hydrogen or carbamide are great elements in helping whiten teeth. Your dentist will use this in their office if you decide to use dentist-office bleaching. This process involves covering your teeth with a shield or gel to protect the gums from bleach.

For over-the-counter products, your dentist may recommend a bleach-based tray, whitening strips, or whitening gels. These are very popular options as well. Whitening toothpastes and mouth rinses tend to be some of the cheaper, quick options. Be sure to look for the ADA seal of approval when purchasing any dental products. These products may also contain stain-fighting agents that also help polish the tooth.

Keep a regular, healthy oral regimen by brushing and flossing daily to help avoid discoloration and stains. Dentin tends to be the yellow showing behind your enamel. This is when the enamel tends to wear down or get damaged either from injury, aging, or continuous wear.

Help your teeth maintain a strong enamel cover by having a healthy diet, exercising regularly, drink a limited amount of wine or coffee (these contain pigments that can stain), and avoiding tobacco and smoking altogether. These can cause nicotine and tar stains. Protect your teeth from injury with a mouth guard during physical activity. Some medications may also cause enamel to break down or dentin to grow.
